An authorized official from the Nuclear Energy Department of the Ministry of Science and Technology told the NSS that, “As the neighbouring country, Banglad­esh is building a nuclear power plant, My­anmar is preparing to implement a radi­ation monit­oring stations in different places near the weather forecast centres.” 

The project is being carried out at the national level to ensure protection from potential radiation accidents, and it is being implemented with the assistance of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

The radiation detection centers are projected to build near the weather forecast stations located in different towns and cities. 

Currently, efforts are being made to form teams, establish emergency preparedness and response plans, raise public awareness, and collaborate with national-level organizations such as the police, fire services, and the Ministry of Information. 

“We are in the way of purchasing process. Since it’s being done under the UN program, it takes some time, usually about a year. By this time next year, we will have fully completed the steps. The radiation monitoring and assessment systems will also be fully set up, and all the data will be collected by then,” the official said.

For this project, there are two years remaining within the four-year project duration, and it is reported that the Decision Support System (DSS) has been fully implemented to assist in decision-making.

Currently, the State Admini­stration Council (SAC) government is preparing to build a mini nuclear power plant, and some MoUs are being signed between the SAC government and Russia for this purpose.
