Maintenance works for Thatbyinnyu Temple expected to begin within months
Khit/ Yoon (NSS) – Feb 14
The maintenance project of Bagan’s Thatbyinnyu Temple, a nine-year schedule and supported by China, is expected to resume within a few months, no later than April, according to the information by the director of the Department of Archaeology and National Museum (Bagan).
The Chinese expert team has already developed plans for the restoration works of Myanmar’s world heritage site, the Thatbyinnyu Temple, which was affected by the earthquake in August 2016.
As per the report, although necessary measures for the restoration project were scheduled to commence in February 2024, it has not yet been carried out due to many unfavourable conditions.
The report states that Myanmar authorities desire to initiate the works as soon as possible for the nine-year-long maintenance project of the Thatbyinnyu Temple in Bagan at the time being.
China signed agreements with Myanmar to assist in the restoration of Thatbyinnyu Temple, one of the world heritage sites in Myanmar on 22 September 2018. In April 2019, emergency measures were taken to maintain and preserve the temple.
The temple and other 389 ancient stupas and pagodas in Bagan ancient sites were damaged by the 6.8 Richter scale earthquake that hit in Central Myanmar in August 2016.
The committee to preserve the tangible and intangible cultural heritages of the nation has already been developed to carry out necessary measures for maintaining and preserving the heritages of Myanmar. –
