Northern Shan State conflict: Insurgents proclaim ceasefire with Tatmadaw; ongoing discussion underway
NSS – Jan 13
The three northern alliance insurgents, involving Kokang (MNDAA), Ta’ang (TNLA) and Rakhine group (AA), released a statement on 12 January in late night that an immediate ceasefire with the Tatmadaw has been agreed and bargaining on other issues are underway.
The National Solidarity and Peacemaking Negotiation Committee (NSPNC) and the guerrilla groups conducted a talk brokered by the China in Kunming from 10 to 11 January and made the Haigeng Agreement. It was the third meeting between the Myanmar Military and the three insurgents.
An immediate ceasefire between the two sides, as per the agreement, has been effective from 11 January 9 pm.
The report states that if any dispute or clashes are arisen, both sides agreed to deal by the dialogue approach. The agreement prescribes that the insurgents pledged not to attack the Tatmadaw security outposts located in the northern Shan State, and vice versa, the Tatmadaw promised not to conduct air strikes or artillery shelling on/to the territories that the insurgents have besieged.
However, armed clashes are still happening between Tatmadaw and the Rakhine insurgent ‘AA’ in the Rakhine State till now.
In addition, both sides agreed not to undermine the safety of Chinese people living in the border area and Chinese projects and personnel in Myanmar.
On the other hand, the State Administration Council also stated that agreement for immediate ceasefire has been reached and efforts are being made to open the channels for border trade routes.
