Authorities claim 15 geosites covering 52,317.85 acres as “Mt. Popa National Geopark”

The Ministry of National Recourses and Environmental Conservation issued Notification No. 152/2023 on 16 December, recognizing 15 geosites as the "Mount Popa National Geopark" in Kyaukpadaung Township, effective from 6 December, 2023.
The Ministry of National Resources and Environmental Conservation, exercising authority conferred by Sub-section (a) of Section 9 of the Conservation of Biodiversity and Protected Area Law 2018, issued Notification No. 152/2023, which officially recognizes 15 geosites covering 52,317.85 acres in Kyaukpadaung Township of NyaungU District in Mandalay Region as “Mount Popa National Geopark”.
The ministry designated the geosites to preserve distinctive landscapes, biodiversity, ecosystems, wildlife, natural heritage, historical sites, and ancient heritages.
It is stated that acknowledging the Mount Popa National Geopark can yield benefits in safeguarding unique geological structures, globally significant geographical features, volcanoes, geological and ancient heritages. Additionally, it fosters geotourism and sustainable development initiatives, promotes ecosystem sustainability, and enables systematic management of biodiversity and forest resources.
