The Department of Metrology and Hydrology has announced that a minor earthquake occurred in Mandalay Region, Myanmar.
The earthquake was recorded at approximately 00:07:39 hours Myanmar Standard Time on December 31, 2023, with its epicenter located about four miles northeast of Sintgaing about 16 miles south of Mandalay seismological observatory.
Following a slight earthquake reported around 12:07 am on December 31st, a Mandalay resident told NP News, "Here in Mandalay, we felt the shaking for about two times. It was around 12:07 and 12:08 am. The first time felt stronger. We heard that the epicenter is from Sagaing. However, it is not so obvious."
According to the Department of Metrology and Hydrology, it is a slight earthquake of magnitude 3.5 Richter Scale with its epicenter inside Myanmar (about (4) miles northeast of Sintgaing), latitude 21.78°N, longitude 96.13°E, depth ten kilometers.
In December 2022, a magnitude 5.2 earthquake centered in Pyigyidagun Township, Mandalay, caused significant damage to the Padamyar Pagoda within the Khantawteik Mani Yadanar monastery compound.
