A chairman of the political party ‘New National Democracy Party’ that will be running in the upcoming election based in Yangon Region was assassinated by terrorists this morning. 

The victim is identified as Than Tun aged 54, the current chairman of the New National Democracy Party (NNDP). 

The terrorists shot him four gunshots in the photocopier shop that is opened at his home at an estimated 8 am in Thingangyun Township, Yangon Region.

The NNDP is confirmed to run as a political party since it has also met with the criteria set by the Union Election Commission to organize a thousand party members within Yangon Region. 

He has started his political activities since1988 political crisis in Myanmar. In addition, he was a member of youth group of the National League for Democracy (NLD) since the NLD was firstly established in 1988. 

As he believed in the election platform to formulate the multi-party democratic election system, he did not join in the NLD’s campaign of ‘No Vote’ movement in 2010 and he became one of the pioneer members of the National Democratic Force (NDF). The NDF was organized by former NLD hardcore members who consistently believe in the election system in 2010. 

Then in 2012, Than Tun joined hand together with the second leader of the NDF, Thein Nyunt, in developing another pro-democracy party ‘New National Democracy Party’. 

At present, he takes full responsibilities of the ‘New National Democracy Party’ since the former chairman Thein Nyunt involved in the body of the State Administration Council. 

Therefore, killing a chairman of a political party that will be running in the election is a threat not to hold the election. 

Last but not least, Than Tun is the very first political party chairman who has been murdered by the terrorists in this 2023 wave of intimidating the upcoming election.
