The water level in Inle Lake is rising at an alarming rate, reaching its highest level in 18 years. Consequently, local residents are growing increasingly concerned. Inle Lake is located in Nyaung Shwe Township, Southern Shan State.

Since the onset of the monsoon season in June, there has been substantial rainfall, resulting in flooding of the first floors of certain village and houses in Inle Lake.

In 2005, the water level of Inle Lake reached a record high up to the platform of the Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda, leading to nearly one month closure of shops, stalls, and schools, due to the flooding. 

“The water level has risen to the point where it touches the tiles. If it goes any higher, we'll need to use boats for transportation. Otherwise, we're hoping for the water level to recede. At the current water level, neither boats nor walking are viable options."

Concerns have arisen regarding the pagoda celebration that is scheduled on October 15th. While the elevated water level does not pose an issue for the Buddha images' processions, it may present challenges for accommodation and commercial activities.

“At this moment, we are just 3 feet away from the water level reaching the pagoda platform. If it occurs, the pagoda festival will be impacted," mentioned one of the vendors at Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda. 

It has been three years that the pagoda festival has been postponed. This year, the Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda Festival is scheduled from October 15th to November 1st, during which the Buddha Images will make their customary procession to 21 different locations.
