Media ethics outweighed degrees for journalists – MOI minister said
NSS – July 31
The Union Minister for the Ministry of Information Maung Maung Ohn highlighted that it is more important that journalists understand and follow the media codes of conduct or ethics rather than holding a bachelor's degree.
He addressed it during the 4 pillars workshop that was held in Naypyidaw in recent days.
During the event, the minister urged the news outlets to assist in constructing unity and solidarity for the State saying that “Expressions by the media have much impact on the tranquility, stability, development, and solidarity of the country; therefore, the news media should be such outlet that helps the country in building unity and solidarity.”
He remarked, “It is more important for the journalists to follow the media ethics rather than holding a university degree.”
The Ministry of Information will cooperate with the news media to share knowledge about media etiquette so that the journalists will understand and follow the COC.
The union minister also requested the media men to understand the current situation of the country with regard to the right to information and reporting since the country’s situation is still complex though it is expected to be stable in some sectors. Therefore, the union minister informed the news media to inform in advance the ministry if they are willing to go to the conflict areas to report.
Last but not least, the union minister remarked that “No matter what political system is practiced, the government, public and all institutions need to be united and the media plays a key role in building stronger ties between those sectors.”
The 4 pillar workshops were held the first time on 30th December 2016; the second time on 21st February 2018 and the third on 30th April 2019.
