The newly inaugurated seven-storey annex building of the Yangon General Hospital signifies a major breakthrough in healthcare for Myanmar, which will provide patients access to advanced medical services including a life-saving bone marrow transplant. 

To mark the 77th Union Day anniversary, the inauguration of a new seven-storey annex building took place at the Yangon General Hospital on Anawrahta Road in Latha Township, Yangon Region, on 21 January. Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, the Chairman of the State Administration Council and Prime Minister, attended the event at the new annex building.

Construction of the new seven-storey annex building was started in 2015. However, the construction was delayed due to various reasons.

According to the SAC’s information team, the state-of-the-art seven-storey annex building of the Yangon General Hospital boasts a dedicated hematology department for blood disorders, a bone marrow transplant unit offering life-saving procedures, and advanced X-ray and related facilities. This expansion allows patients to receive specialized treatment and comprehensive diagnostics within the hospital, significantly improving healthcare accessibility and quality.

The Yangon General Hospital stands as the largest of its kind in Myanmar, serving as a crucial facility that the public has relied upon for health and education purposes over successive periods.

Founded in 1873 with just 483 beds, Yangon General Hospital has undergone a remarkable transformation over the years. It has steadily expanded to its present day with 2,000-bedded in 2016, playing a pivotal role in enhancing public health services and offering vital health care to generations of communities.

This new seven-storey building serves as an annex to Yangon General Hospital, aimed at delivering enhanced international healthcare services to the public.

During the opening ceremony, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing acknowledged that, despite the government's efforts to enhance healthcare services, the public's access to improved healthcare continues to face challenges due to various disturbances and obstacles.
