Tension potentially stiffens between Tatmadaw, SSPP in Laihka, Shan State
Hsu/ Myo Gyi (NP News) – June 15
Myanmar military (Tatmadaw) requested the Shan State Progress Party/Shan State Army (SSPP/SSA) to withdraw ten military bases that are located in Laihka, Southern Shan State. However, the SSPP/ SSA denied the Tatmadaw’s demand.
Tatmadaw made the request once on 9th June and then again on 11th June, according to an announcement by the SSPP/SSA.
The military bases of the SSPP/SSA are strategically located on the southern part of the Laihka – Pan Lon Highway situated in Laihka Township, serving as the vital area for security of the SSPP/SSA headquarters.
Therefore, the SSPP/SSA mentioned that “it is impractical to comply with the Myanmar Military's demand for withdrawal”.
The escalating tensions between the two parties have further intensified as the SSPP/SSA alleges that the Myanmar Military has been deploying hundreds of soldiers in the region. With the SSPP/SSA refusing to withdraw their military bases, the situation remains highly sensitive.
Despite these developments, the NP News has not been able to obtain any formal announcement from the State Administration Council regarding the situation.
Shan State Progress Party/ Shan State Army (SSPP/SSA) is one of the groups that attended the peace talk invited by the SAC Chairman Senior General Min Aung Hlaing in April 2022.
There were also peace discussions between SAC’s NSPNC and SSPP/SSA.
