Implementations will be carried out to install solar system to generate 14 megawatts power in the Thilawa Special Economic Zone, according to the Ministry of Electric Power (MOEP).  

At present, in Thilawa SEZ, three factories have already installed the solar systems to produce electricity from solar energy, and about 2 megawatts of power are being used.

In addition, the MOEP informed that according to the studies conducted by the zone companies, solar systems can generate up to 14 megawatts of power in the zone.

"According to the explorations of the zone companies to install solar systems to generate the power, solar systems can be installed to generate up to 14 megawatts, and it is proposed that implementation will be processed in phases for the summer," an official from the ministry told The NSS.

Myanmar-Japan Thilawa Development Company Limited (MJTD) also stated that after the installation of the solar system, it will transmit and distribute power to other factories within the special economic zone through the power line of the MOEP when the power generation capacity of the solar system exceeds the load in use.

If electricity is obtained from the solar power and solar plant, the electricity originally used in the zone will be able to be used in other places where it is needed. Therefore, Vice-Senior General Soe Win, Chairman of the Central Committee of Myanmar Special Economic Zone, urged to generate solar electricity in the Thilawa SEZ.

The Thilawa SEZ covers an area of 667.275 hectares with Zone-A and Zone-B, Free Zone and Promotion Zone sectors. A total of 114 companies from 21 countries have invested in it.

Among the three economic zones in Myanmar that are currently being implemented, the Thilawa SEZ is the most successful zone.
