The World’s Largest Book: How a 19th-Century King Carved Buddhism’s Sacred Texts in Stone

Hsu (NSS) - Oct 2

Imagine a book so vast that its pages would stretch 340 feet into the sky if stacked together, a book that requires an estimated 450 days of continuous reading to finish, and whose every page is a slab of solid marble engraved with sacred script.

This is not a flight of literary fancy. It is the Kuthodaw Pagoda, an extraordinary Buddhist monument at the foot of Mandalay Hill that holds a unique claim to fame: it is home to the world’s largest book. For international travelers seeking destinations that blend profound spirituality with architectural wonder, this golden temple and its sprawling library of stone offer an experience found nowhere else on earth.

A King’s Vision to Preserve the Faith

The story of this monumental book begins in the mid-19th century, a time of great upheaval for Myanmar, then known as Burma. King Mindon, the penultimate ruler of the Konbaung Dynasty, relocated his capital to Mandalay in 1857 and sought to create a lasting spiritual legacy.

His vision was both religious and political. Facing the encroaching threat of British colonial expansion, King Mindon convened the Fifth Buddhist Council in 1871 to purify and preserve the teachings of Theravada Buddhism. To ensure these teachings would survive for millennia—by tradition, for 5,000 years—he ordered the entire Pali Canon to be inscribed not on fragile paper or palm leaf, but on imperishable marble.

Construction of the Kuthodaw Pagoda, formally titled Maha Lawka Marazein, began in 1857 alongside the new royal capital. The massive task of carving the scriptures commenced in 1860 and took nearly nine years to complete, finishing in 1868. The result was a permanent, immutable record of the Buddha’s word.

What Exactly Is the “World’s Largest Book”?

The book is not a single bound volume, but rather a collection of 729 marble slabs, each measuring approximately five feet tall, three and a half feet wide, and five inches thick. Each slab is inscribed on both sides, creating a total of 1,458 pages of densely written text. A 730th slab, located at the southeastern corner of the innermost row, serves as a dedication stone, chronicling the history and construction of the site itself.

The contents represent the entirety of the Tipitaka—literally the “Three Baskets”—which form the canonical scriptures of Theravada Buddhism. These texts comprise over 8,000 teachings attributed to the Buddha, covering monastic discipline (Vinaya), discourses (Sutta), and higher doctrine (Abhidhamma).

When the slabs were first unveiled, each line of text was filled with resplendent golden ink, and the stones were further adorned with precious gems, including rubies and diamonds. The central golden pagoda, rising 57 meters high and modeled after the Shwezigon Pagoda in Bagan, stood as the ornate cover of this colossal book. However, when British troops invaded in the mid-1880s, they looted the site, stripping away the gold leaf and gems from the marble slabs.

Despite this desecration, the words themselves remained. Today, the inscriptions have been refilled with simple black ink made from shellac, soot, and straw ash, ensuring the teachings remain legible for future generations. In 2013, recognizing its global significance, UNESCO inscribed the Kuthodaw Inscription Shrines in its Memory of the World Register.

A Journey Through a Living Manuscript

Visiting Kuthodaw is unlike any typical museum or temple experience. As you pass through the ornate teakwood entrance, you are immediately greeted by a breathtaking sight: hundreds of small, whitewashed stupas arranged in neat, geometric rows around the central golden pagoda.

Each of these petite, bell-shaped shrines—known as *kyauksa gu*, or “stone-inscription caves”—houses a single marble slab. Walking among them feels like stepping into the pages of a giant, open manuscript. The sheer scale of the endeavor becomes viscerally real as you wander the quiet, sun-dappled pathways between the white stupas, ancient Mimusops trees providing shade and a sense of timeless serenity.

The atmosphere is deeply tranquil, especially in the early morning or late afternoon when the crowds thin and the light softens. It is a place for slow, contemplative exploration. Even for those who cannot read the Burmese script, the palpable sense of devotion and history is profoundly moving.

Why Kuthodaw Belongs on Your Travel List

For international travelers, the Kuthodaw Pagoda offers a rare combination of spiritual depth, historical importance, and photogenic beauty. It is not merely a relic to be observed but a site of living devotion, where pilgrims still come to pay homage.

The practical details for a visit are straightforward. The pagoda is open daily from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM. While there is no fixed entry fee, foreign visitors are generally required to purchase a Mandalay Archaeological Zone ticket, which also grants access to other nearby attractions. As a sacred site, modest attire is required—shirts with sleeves and trousers or skirts covering the knees. Shoes and socks must be removed before entering the temple grounds.

Located just northeast of the Mandalay Palace moat, the pagoda is easily accessible by taxi or tuk-tuk from anywhere in the city. A visit to Kuthodaw pairs perfectly with other nearby highlights, including Sandamuni Pagoda which is home to the largest iron Buddha image in Myanmar, a cast iron statue weighing around 19 tonnes and a sunset climb up Mandalay Hill for panoramic views of the city and the Irrawaddy River.

In a world of fleeting digital content and disposable information, Kuthodaw stands as a powerful testament to the enduring value of the written word—and to a king’s determination to preserve his faith in stone for eternity. It is a destination that leaves travelers with a sense of wonder, offering the sacred words carved not just in marble, but in the history of a nation.
